SQUIRREL HUNT

We got Abe just about one year ago off Craig's List, from a kind

family in McKinney, TX who just didn't have room for their two

big dogs and their seven (yes SEVEN) children under five years old.

They were foster parents and had just gotten three more at

once. This was such a blessing to us, because Abe is just, well,

he's just perfect. We can't imagine our lives without him now.

Abe's favorite thing in the whole world is to hunt for squirrels in our woods.

It's his passion. It's the best part of his day. It's his reason for waking up

in the morning.

ABE: Look, a squirrel!!! DAVID: Where?

ABE: There he is!! See him?

And yee-haw, the chase is on. No one is hurt in these hunting

expeditions. Ever since I discovered the frozen body of a little headless

squirrel in my freezer (screaming sounds, sound of freezer door slamming

shut and running feet), David does not hunt squirrel with guns.

Here's what happens when Abe and David (and yes, I admit that I

participate in this sport too) spot a squirrel. The squirrel usually sits very, very

still. David then begins harassing the squirrel by pulling on grapevines attached

to the tree, or tossing sticks up at the squirrel, anything to get him to move. Once

he starts jumping from tree to tree, that's the fun part. Abe and David (and yes,

I admit even me) go crashing through the woods, hollering "Git him Abe, git the squirrel!"

Of course the squirrel never touches the ground and probably enjoys this

as much as us. Probably.

Country life, you gotta love it.

RETIRED

I keep getting all these AARP things in the mail.

It started happening I think when I turned 50. I threw the

offensive envelopes immediately in the trash with a huff.

What are they sending this to ME for?? I'll soon

be 56. The creepy thing is that I actually read one of them

the other day. (I know-I couldn't believe it either)

Thing is, I don't believe in retirement. I mean not for me. Not for David.

What does that even look like? We will never retire. We don't have a retirement

fund (GASP).

These tires are retired...or are they? Around here things are

brought out of retirement all the time to begin a brand new life.

Here's David pulling something out of retirement now.

What could it be?
David: Now see this? This would make a perfect large
aquarium stand for mom. (David's mom is starting to raise different
types of fish - more on that later, oh and she's 80 yrs old, by the way.)

And these, look at these! These would make great...like ears for a big
iron sculpture! Hey, that's right!

So next time you look in the mirror and you are looking a

little old and rusty, just remember, it ain't over til it's over!

My, my....what to do? Ever been in that situation?

Ever heard the expression 'Calculated Risk'.?

"Well, yes, I know I could lose everything, but this is a calculated risk. (Not to be confused with an idiotiotic, WHAT WAS I THINKING???? idea.

There are times when as Christians we are asked to go against impossible looking odds. Think of David and Goliath, Gideon and his tiny army against unbelievable odds...the Bible is full of these stories. So when do we know if it's just another one of our cockamamie (cock-uh-may-mee) ideas, or it's the Lord's direction? That's a hard one. However, I do have a scripture:

"If any anyone lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all men liberally."

(James 1:5)

And if you go ahead with what you think the Lord is leading you to do and something like this happens....

(pretend you are the donkey, not the guy)

Try to remain calm at all times and remember that God is in charge, no matter how things look at the moment.

(What the heck were those guys thinking???)

P.S. I just had to tell you a couple of things. First of all, I didn't take these pictures (I KNOW! shocking, right?) I got them from my favorite sister-in-law, BFF, Bettye, who lives in Alabama, because my brother took her away from me years ago and we never get to see each other and I am still mad at him about that. So, thank you Bettye. I LOVED these pics.

AND....what really got me thinking about this whole risk taking thing is because a little mouse who was eating our dogfood unfortunately did not consider the risk that carefully when he saw a piece tied to a tiny, little mousetrap. Scurry, rattle. SNAP....silence........

O.D. THE DUCK

We have a few ponds on the farm. On one of the ponds we can usually see a black and white duck tooling around. He's a domestic duck and he pays us no mind. He's not our duck, mind you. He's our neighbor, Oscar's, duck. So we decided to call him O.D.

The other day David decided it would be a good idea to feed O.D.

when we go on our morning walks. I took a piece of bread and here's how it went:

Well first off, you can see that Abe figures any treats being handed out, must be for him, right?

After a lot of calling and quacking,

just in case O.D. couldn't understand English, he ventures over.

I toss my bread upon the waters. Abe: Over here, mom! Where's your glasses?

O.D.: YUMMMMMM. This stuff is really great!

Okay Abe, can you shake hands? Abe: What do you think?

Abe: At last!!!! (stupid duck)

JOANN'S PLACE

I know this is not part of the petting zoo, etc - but

this bottle tree of Joann's says a lot about her.

She's creative, whimsical and colorful.

I love my mother-in-law, Joann.

Here's the outside animals, the petting zoo.

The geese make great watch dogs.

Such honking they make whenever anyone approaches!

Then there's Joann's favorite,

precious Ben, her miniature, white donkey.

Here is Tag (named because of the tag

that was in his ear when he was purchased),

and goat and other goat respectively.

SPRING, ALREADY???

It's not officially Spring for

22 more days. But things around here

are definitely getting an early start.

the geese have flown North (see earlier Geese Watching post)
There are tons of tadpoles in our back lake (we put out a minnow trap and when we hauled it up, there were like 10 big tadpoles in it!
I found a ladybug on the edge of Abe's water bowl yesterday
the fruit trees are budding
and tiny little flowers are appearing everywhere!

So we decided we better get some stuff planted in the garden. We put the little plants in the trooper, and Abe of course, and off we went. Abe was so embarrassed that I was taking his picture. He refused to make eye contact.

On the way, we stopped by to see my sister-in-law, Donna.

It appears that David was sitting on Purdy's sofa. (Purdy is the big, white english setter next to David) Bonnie, the chihuahua needed to sniff David's collar.

Yep, there it goes. Grow little cabbage grow!!!

And let's hear it for the onions that have survived the

single digit temperatures earlier this month and are

still thriving.

GEESE WATCHING

This is one of the grandest sights in the world to David, geese flying, on their way North in the spring and South in the winter. Doesn't matter. He just wants to watch them.

And He wants me to watch them. I can be in the middle of the most interesting story.

Me: And then Carol said....

David: LOOK! GEESE!!!

Me: Is that a shotgun shell?

I do occasionally glance up at the geese. I mean, I don't want

to be rude. And sometimes they are pretty magnificent.

But to David they are a wonder.

They are a miracle!

They are fascinating beyond belief!!

He just has to look.

He has to.

Wow.

(Yeah - more geese, I know David - good, wonderful)

You just keep watching them sweetie.

I'm going inside to watch Nate Berkus. It's 2 o'clock.

RE-PURPOSING (AFTER)

This is a classic country style carport, made of 100% re-cycled materials. It's not quite finished yet, as you can see. We need 8 more 2 x 4's and David is loathe to actually buy new ones.

This tin on the roof (don't you loved the rust and blue color of it?) came from our friend, Bill Klein, who invited us to come over and glean building materials as he was demolishing a house and some outbuildings on his mother's property. Yeah!!! And thank you Bill!!!!

Ah, and do you recognize those telephone poles??? This is going to be our little horse barn.

And then there's this wonderful old screen door from the aluminum section

of one of Harold's categorized dumping areas. Thanks Harold. You did know what you were doing after all. Sorry I never got to tell you that.

RE-PURPOSED (BEFORE)

When I was a young bride, I used to think my father-in-law was nuts to always be saving things. Endless coffee cans of nuts and bolts, old screen doors, old posts, bits of iron, string, etc., etc. Back in the 70's no one ever heard of 'going green' or 're-purposing'.

Since moving to the farm, I have a whole new respect for Harold. Anytime we need to build something or repair something or even create something artistic, we visit Harold's categorized dumping areas on our property we inherited from him and David's mom.

David doesn't remember exactly where his dad got several old telephone posts, but they have been back here in front of our woods for literally decades now. We are quickly using them up.

Then there's these wonderful old railroad cross ties. They have a variety of uses, mainly to do with landscaping.

And here is a stack of steel fence posts left over from my brother and sister-in-law's emu farming days. Aren't they are tempting little pile?

RUSTIC IS GOOD

I've always appreciated

the rustic look. There such

texture and character about it, isn't there?

Give me texture over slick any day,

except on maybe like a bra strap.

This is a picture of our entry way. David decided to give it a new look. We've been here a year and have not had much time for things like entry ways.

Earlier this week David cut down a huge cedar on the back of our place. It got 'hung up' in some other trees and we like to never got it to fall down on the ground. There was lots of figuring, throwing ropes way up in the tree, ropes snapping, tree not falling, David climbing up half felled tree (cracking noises!!!), David climbing down real fast and FINALLY it came crashing down. It was sad in a way, to see a tree fall. But it's not really gone, It has a new life in our entry way. It will welcome all our friends and customers. It will be the first one to say "Hello, we are so glad you are here!"

And yes, you are right, it's not finished yet, but it will be soon, if I know my David. The only problem is that Abe, beautiful, soft, freshly bathed and smelling so sweet, Abe, wants to help with gathering the small cedar (what would you call those? tines? posts?). Well, those skinnier posts that go between the big posts. And he has gotten at least four big drops of cedar sap on his hair!! Oh Abe!!!

New Piece in the Works!

So here it is February...ummm yes, 17th! Here at BurdenStudio things have calmed down a bit since the Christmas season, which, by the way, was wonderful and hectic. In the relative calm, I have been able to sculpt a new piece and wanted to share it with you.

She is 10 inches x 5.5 inches x 4.5 inches and her flute is brass. I am going to call her

"Heavenly Melody"

This is the original terra cotta sculpture and she is obviously in progress and drying out to be fired. This progress usually takes about two weeks. Then we will be able to do a mold on her and then start casting! I'm excited!!!

I've also done a couple of small pieces for fun. They are also sculpted in terra cotta and I am offering them for sale for $35 each. No molds on these - they are originals.

This one I call

"Weenie with a Twist"

This is dedicated to our dear, departed weenie dog, Sister Burden. It is 5 inches x 3.5 inches x 2.5 inches, sculpted of terra cotta.

Obviously this one is in the drying process as well.

And then there's
"Ben"

He's 3.5 inches x 4.5 inches x 2 inches

He was inspired by my mother-in-law's little donkey, Ben.

Isn't he adorable??

Oh, and he's been fired and is just natural terra cotta, no patina.

And then for the BIG finish, this piece is one that I have had sculpted awhile, but have just finished off properly. I will be entering her in a couple of juried competitions, but wanted to let you see her, and of course, she will be for sale. The price is $450.00

Goodbye and Godspeed Trisha!

It's with mixed emotions that we say goodbye, farewell, etc. to our wonderful, beautiful, talented, hardworking General Manager, our daughter, Trisha. Many of you have come to know Trisha this past year as she has been working with us. She came on board just as we were launching out into the 'deep' so to speak. She walked into an office that looked like a tornado hit it and said "Guys, there's going to have to be some changes here." All we could do was tremble slightly with relief mixed with a little fear. And so it began, the great transformation from slightly organized chaos to the tight ship we needed to be. It's been a year of great joy to work with Trisha. She left a wonderful career in Houston to come and help us out, and now a year later, she is re-entering the corporate world. Thank goodness she is just a phone call away when I am freaking out over Quick Books.

So when you call BurdenStudio now, it will be Cindy or David who answer your call. We look forward to visiting with you and getting to know some of our newer customers.

Yesterday Everything Broke

Yesterday everything broke. Well, okay, not everything - these three things in this order:

1. The treadmill

2. The water filter thing that fits on our kitchen faucet

3. The hot air popcorn popper

It rained yesterday! FIVE INCHES! David took our dog, Abe, for a walk. Here's a picture of Abe. It was raining when they went, not that hard, but enough that they were wet when they got back.

"The Lord gave me this scripture this morning from Ecclesiastes. I was really grateful and challenged. Seems everything in business is a challenge these days. I got to thinking about all the stores who buy our sculptures, in faith that they will sell. I takes such faith to do that. I want to say 'thank you' to you all this morning, for not focusing on the wind and the clouds, but going ahead, trusting the Lord, who is our provider. I want you to know that I'm praying for your success, both in your business and in the kingdom.

I forgot our tithe last Sunday. It had been a good week and I was excited to to be able to give more. But when I looked at our bank balance this morning, it had shrunk significantly and I felt that temptation to be a storm watcher, hunker down and 'hold what ya got.' That's when the Lord gave me the scripture from Ecclesiates. Now I'm almost excited to write that check and put it in the offering box. I think I'll drive down to the church today instead of waiting for Sunday.

I hope you are encouraged today to be bold for the Lord, to trust Him because He is so worthy of your trust. We would be CRAZY not to trust Him....really. Blessings y'all...Cindy."

Looking Closely

"I was sitting and reading through my journal this morning. Mostly it consists of sciptures that jump out at me as I am doing my Bible reading. This entry is dated October 1, 2009 and I felt that I should share it. So here it is:

'As I look out the patio door at the glory of God's beautiful creation, I am stunned as usual at it. It's only a backyard in Burleson, TX. It's not the Grand Canyon. It's a cement patio with a

swing. There's a building in the backyard, some bushes, plants, pathway, etc. It's commonplace, but quite beautiful. The war, yellow/pink brightness of the early morning sun filters through the screen of leaves at the very back of the yard.

Then for some reason I am drawn to looking through each sqaure of our faux French patio door. There are 30 squares. Each a picture frame. I cover one eye and make a fist with a tiny hole to look through with my other hand. This way I can focus on each frame without seeing the rest of the frames. Carefully I look at each one. I'm amazed at the beauty of each one. Though only part of the picture, each one could be a stand alone painting! Such texture, such color, such stark simplicity, such contract - WOW! I continue to shift from one frame to the next, still looking only through the tiny 'hand-made' viewer.

Then I take my hand down and I am DAZZLED by the whole picture, DAZZLED! I'm excited. This is important. I know it is. God is showing me His glory. Some many times we are told to glorify the Lord. And suddenly I know this is a picture of the church, each one of us beautifully unique, wonderfully and powerfully made, with such depth, color and texture. Each so different, so unique, so individual, so beautiful on our own. We are all stand alone masterpieces of God. But when we come together and are where God has placed us in the body - oh, my goodness, the beauty of it! This what God is saying about unity, about each part of the body is important - about how people will know we are of God because of our love for one another. Amazing!

I just felt led to share this. I know it encouraged me when I read it this morning and I hope it encourages whoever reads it. Let's go out and dazzle the world with the glory of God today!"

New Pieces

Worship The Lord is the new series Cindy is working on under the complete inspiration of what the Lord is showing her. This picture was taken only after a day and a half of sculpting. (No name to this piece yet but we'll keep you posted.)

FPW Gallery Visit

On Friday night, the board for the Fellowship of Professional Women came for a private showing of our gallery! They were having their annual retreat at the Cornerstone Lodge in Scurry which is only 5 minutes from us. It was such a treat to see all of them again, and meet a few we hadn't met before.

As you can see, Abraham, our faithful gallery dog, was on the job. Everyone loved him and he remained unruffled as always.

Ladies' Bible Study @ The Gallery

This past Thursday, June 3rd, the Thursday Night Ladies' Bible Study group came to our Gallery!! It was such a fun night. We had 29 ladies there, and we borrowed folding charis from the church and had light refreshments. Everybody was given a piece of clay, and Cindy was blessed to share her testimony.

The parking lot was full!

The Gallery was full!

And Abraham, our gallery dog, was on hand to greet our guests.
Lots of shopping, laughing, talking, and sharing.

Thanks to everyone who came. It was such a blessing!

Adventures in Christ: "On time and on target"

"As we were about to leave, I just mentioned as an aside, "Oh, I'm an artist." This is where things got exciting! Her eyes got HUGE and said "What did you say?? You're an artist??" I nodded yes and she flung open the bottom half of the door and almost drug Pam and I into her office. She repated again with great intensity and increased volume, "YOU'RE AN ARTIST?" Pam started chuckling, which made me laugh (Pam has an very contagious laugh). At this point another woman stepped into the office, and Nora exlamied "LEAH! SHE'S AN ARTIST!" Leah's eyes bugged out as she looked at me and back at Nora. Both their mouths were hanging wide open. Pam and I were laughing pretty hard now, and they started laughing too. I still had no idea what was going on, but I sensed it was pretty cool."

Molly - Senior Portraits

It was a windy day, but Molly braved the wind to take some great shots! Molly is a graduating senior at Mabank H.S., and we were excited to have her in our first shoot here in Scurry. Thanks Molly! We held our Grand Opening on Saturday, April 17th, and we were blessed with pleasant weather and a good crowd of visitors.
